Dog Days at Bass Pro Shops

Success! Friends of the Animal Village and the Little Rock Animal Village accomplished some amazing things this past Saturday, March 14. Dog Days at Bass Pro Shops welcomed hundreds of folks and their fur babies for engaging seminars, a fabulous pet fashion show (featuring some adoptables from LRAV), and $15 microchipping courtesy of FAV / LRAV. In just two hours, we microchipped 100 animals!! That's one micro-chip every 1.2 minutes. A big thanks to Dr. Brian Barron and his staff from the Shackleford Road Veterinary Clinic. On top of that, eight pups were adopted on the spot from the Village's Mobile Adoption Unit. So, we'll say it again... Success!

Happy St. Pitty's Day!

Ah, the pit bull…where do we begin? I guess a good starting point is, where does Friends of the Animal Village stand on the subject? Well, we love them. We look at them the same way as any other type of dog…capable of love, humor, intelligence, and loyalty. Hundreds of pit bulls end up at the Little Rock Animal Village every year, so we see a lot of them. I especially love pit bulls on a personal level. I had a pit bull of my own named Vegas until two weeks ago, when my best friend crossed the rainbow bridge at the age of twelve. Before I got Vegas, I was already firmly on the side that believes pit bulls deserve as much of a chance to be wonderful family dogs as do dogs of any other breed.

Where do shelter animals come from?

There's a common misconception that the pets at animal shelters are there because they weren't, or wouldn't be, good pets. While that is true occasionally, it's actually pretty rare. Sadly, the vast majority of the animals that end up at shelters are simply lost. A few are reunited with their owners, usually thanks to a microchip, but most aren't. We don't know why their owners don't come looking for them, but that's the reality of the situation. Second to lost pets, the other big source of animals at shelters is owner surrenders. However, the owner has a legitimate reason to surrender their pet in frustratingly few cases. The most popular reasons for surrendering a pet are "I'm moving," and
