Peanut's Story

Many of you have already met Peanut either through Facebook or in real-life at the Village. For those of you who haven't, Peanut is a gorgeous two-and-a-half-year-old yellow lab mix who was brought to the Little Rock Animal Village in December of 2014. We were told that the folks who brought him had been letting him "hang around" for a couple months after he had been hit by a car on the road in front of their house. This backstory came to us third- or fourth-hand, so we're not sure how accurate it actually was by the time we heard it. One thing was certain, though: Peanut was injured, and the injury didn't seem to be a recent one. Another certainty? This dog was absolutely adorable and very

Don't Punish the Growl

It's Dog Bite Prevention Week! Here is an excellent article by trainer and dog behavior specialist Lisa Mullinax, ACDBC. You can find her on Facebook at 4Paws University. DOG BITE PREVENTION TIP: Many dog owners have been told that growling is a sign that the dog is seeking total world domination, and the only way to maintain one's dominance is to fight back. Fast forward to the modern world of dog behavior. We now know that aggressive displays are a normal, natural, non-violent form of communication. Once a person stops whatever behavior triggered the growling, the dog will stop growling. A healthy dog will not escalate once the threatening interaction ends. They don't need to. Dogs

Where are our Basset fans?! Today we have a Bassett Hound triple feature for Dog of the Week! Meet Romeo, Juliet, and Farly. Romeo (Pet ID# 34908) and Juliet (Pet ID# 34909) came in together, and Farly (Pet ID# 34841) was picked up on Meadowcliff Drive. Since no one has come to reclaim them, all three are now available for adoption from the Little Rock Animal Village and are looking for forever homes with somebody to love. True to the ‪Basset Hound‬ nature, all three are very sweet and affectionate. How cute are those big ears?! If you're thinking about adding to your family, any of these three would be great c

Meet Georgie! FAV's Cat of the Week

Wanted: A Special Person to Give a Nine-Year-Old Kitty a Second Chance at the Good Life! This is Georgie (Pet ID# 34604), and he's our Cat of the Week. Weighing in at 28 lbs., Georgie was immediately put on a diet, and is now with a foster family who can give him lovin' and help him shed some pounds. This is the kind of kitty who would benefit immensely from the addition of "Joey's Play Room," which can't be built until we've raised the $60,000 we need. Thanks to Joey The Garden Cat and THV 11, we're almost halfway to that goal. If you're int

Furs-day Fun: Interview with a Guinea Pig

Y'all... It's important to take a moment to ask your pet some questions and find out what they really think. For instance, what kind of pet would they like to have? What exactly is it that they do at home alone all day? What is it like to be an only pet? Their answers might surprise you! (And/or make you seek out a pet therapist stat.)

It's National Puppy Mill Action Week!

It's National Puppy Mill Action Week! According to 2014 figures, Arkansas makes up less than 1% of the population of the United States. But Arkansas puppy mills make up 7% of the The Humane Society of the United States' worst 100 puppy mills list for 2015. Seven breeders in Arkansas made the worst 100 list this year. Several have appeared on the list in prior years. Why? Because business is good for puppy mills in Arkansas, and they're allowed to operate in our state with impunity. Opponents of the recent puppy mill bill that failed in the Arkansas legislature say, "oh we already have laws in place to deal with this." No we don't. There are laws to punish those who mistreat animals after the

Arkansas's First Cat Café at LRAV

Cat Cafés, which have been a longstanding and popular tradition in Europe, are beginning to pop up in the United States. Beginning this week on Thursday, May 7, Arkansas welcomes its very first Cat Café—now a part of the Little Rock Animal Village's (LRAV) bi-monthly Cats' Night Out. On the first and third Thursday of each month, the public is invited to LRAV from 5:00 - 7:00 PM to enjoy free coffee and pastries, courtesy of Mylo Coffee Co., sponsor of the LRAV Cat Café. Guests will also be able to mingle with adoptable felines, who will be roaming freely for the evening. Because LRAV waives adoption fees for adult cats during Cats' Night Out, this popular series has long been billed as "the
